Guide to puppy potty training

How to potty train your puppy within a period of 7 days.

Potty training can be a nightmare

Many guardians complain that despite training, the puppy is pooping and peeing in the house.

Potty training can be difficult if the guardians do not understand and follow the right techniques

Potty training made easy

Here are tips, tricks and strategies that would make potty training very easy.

It may take 4 to 6 months to get your pup completely trained. But within a 7 day period, you may lay down the basic ground rules and get started on the task

Let’s begin the guide to puppy potty training

When should you start?

Start training your pup is when he/she is 12-16 weeks old.

Start at 12-16 weeks because before this age puppies do not have control over their bladder or bowel movements.

For older dogs/dogs with unfavorable habits

Retraining is best

The retraining may take a few weeks or months depending on the dog. If you follow these steps, the training would go much faster.

Day 1

Establish a feeding schedule

The schedule must be consistent with your puppy's feeding schedule. Do not restrict the water intake of your pup

Day 2

Start taking your dog out according to the schedule

Post meals and right after your pup wakes up from his or her nap are the other crucial times when they must be allowed to go out to do their business. Praise your pup when he/she conducts his/her business

Day 3

Finding the right spot

Imprint it in your puppy ‘where’ is it okay to relieve. Once your dog starts to associate a specific place with pooping, whenever you take your dog to that place, he or she will want to poop and pee there.

Day 4

Learn the signs that your pup needs to go outside.

Common signs that a puppy needs to go is pacing back and forth, getting up and going to a different area of the house, sniffing, circling, barking, scratching at the door or whining.

Day 5

There should be less accidents

Continue to follow the schedule to the T. If your pup starts to defecate in the house, clap loudly. Take your pup outside immediately and praise when the business is done outside

Day 6

Follow the schedule

By now if your pup is regularly having accidents in the house, there may be an underlying medical problem. Get it checked by the vet

Day 7

Almost there

Follow the schedule
Feed at specific times
Understand the signals
Praise your pup when he/she follows commands

Never punish

If your pup has an accident, do not punish him/her.

Punishment never works. It will only make your dog fearful of you and delay the training progress. If there is an accident, clear it as soon as possible. That's it. Do not scold or punish your dog/pup. Click on the link to read more.
