Behavior to watch out for in a new puppy

Puppies are a bundle of joy and energy. They are constantly running around and trying to chew whatever they find. However, there are certain behaviors that a responsible guardians must watch out for.

1. Excessive chewing

Puppies chew but to a limit

If you notice your puppy chewing on walls, eating the paint or chewing anything in sight all the time, it is a sign that the nutritional needs of your puppy are not being met. Consult a veterinarian to rule out any medical condition. In absence of medical issue, the cause can be anxiety.

2. Aggression

While playing a bit of growling is okay. Otherwise not!

While some playful roughhousing is normal for puppies, aggressive behavior like biting, growling, or snapping should not be ignored.

3. Fearfulness

excessive shyness is a red flag

Puppies that seem excessively shy, timid, or easily frightened may have a difficult time adjusting to new environments and may need extra socialization. You must be patient and work with them.

4. Excessive barking

Excessive barking or barking all the time is not natural

While barking is a natural form of communication for dogs, if your puppy seems to bark excessively, especially at seemingly nothing, it could be a sign of boredom, anxiety, or a lack of socialization.

5. Destructive behavior

Destroying things and bringing the house down is not acceptable

If your puppy seems to be constantly destroying things or has a particular focus on destroying one specific item, it could be a sign of anxiety, boredom, or a lack of proper training. Provide your puppy more walks, training and mental stimulation to help reduce this behavior.

7. Lack of appetite

Puppies must eat 4 times a day

If your puppy isn't eating or shows little interest in food, it could be a sign of illness or stress. You can also try to add wet and dry food and see if it helps. If it doesn't then visit a vet as soon as possible.

7. Lethargy

If your puppy is constantly low on energy its a sign of illness

Puppies are typically full of energy, so if your pup seems to be excessively tired or lethargic, it could be a sign of illness or stress.

8. Excessive whining

excessive whining = anxiety

While puppies will whine from time to time, if your puppy seems to whine excessively or for no apparent reason, it could be a sign of anxiety or distress. Do not dismiss this behaviour. Instead try to find out what's wrong

9. Excessive panting

Anxiety or overheated?

If your puppy seems to be panting excessively or at inappropriate times, it could be a sign of anxiety or overheating. It may seem like a small problem but as a responsible dog guardian, you must not ignore it.

10. Inappropriate elimination

If you puppy is not able to control the bladder or the urge to defecate it can be a sign of an underlying medical illness.

f your puppy is having accidents in the house or seems to be having difficulty potty training, it could be a sign of stress or a lack of proper training. In case you notice that your pup is having a hard time controlling the bladder or the urge to defecate it can be due to an incontinence issue. Get it checked as soon as possible.
