When should you train your dog?

Training starts the day the dog becomes a member of your family/pack

Whether it is a puppy or an adult, every dog needs guidance to understand how to adjust. If it is a puppy, the first training you will start with is bite inhibition and potty training. IN case of older dogs, you will have to understand what the dog already knows and work on the commands the dog may be confused about or not know.

Tips for training your dog

These tips will help you raise a dog who is well behaved.

Use these tips and follow them carefully. It is advisable that you make a list of these and stick it to the fridge, so you can remember your role in the training of your dog

1. Fun

Training time should also be fun time for the two of you

Training has more roles than just teaching your dog the correct manners. It is during the training sessions that the dog learns your behavioral cues and understands your likes and dislikes. Your dog will also learn to trust you during the training session. Therefore, use the time wisely.

2. Brain exercise

Change the task frequently so your dog exercises his brain

Training is the time when your dog not only exercises their body but their minds too. Make sure their are mind exercises involved as well.

3. Build the trust

No relationship can succeed without trust

Make sure your dog trusts you. This is the first step of the training process. When your dog trusts you, he/she will follow you and your commands. An untrustworthy dog will be hard to train.

4. Train positive

Use positive cues, reinforcements and lots of love

When your dog follows your command, reward immediately. Do not delay the reward by even a few seconds. Positive reinforcements will help your dog learn faster and build his/her trust in you.

5. Never punish

Punishment never works

Punishment will only make your dog aggressive or frightened. It will never help you raise a well balanced pup. Click on the link to know the effects punishment has on your pup.

6. Show, not force

Show your dog what you are trying to teach

When training your dog, show them what you want them to do. Never pull them by the collar or shout at them if they do not understand. Patience is the key of dog training process.

7. Be patient

Patience is the key to successful dog training

Never train your dog when you feel impatient, angry, sad or just off. always be patient with your pup. Dogs are like toddlers who never grow up. They should be treated the same way you would treat a human toddler.

8. Keep commands consistent

The biggest and most frequent mistake committed by the guardian

Once the guardian says, "come"
The second time the guardian says, "get over here".

If you are using "come" as the command, you must always say "come". Changing the command confuses your dog.

9. keep training short

Dogs have short attention spans.

If your dog gets bored during training, stop training your dog or keep the sessions short. You can train multiple times a day to cover up the time.

10. Never train in busy regions

Not until you are confident your dog can handle distractions

Busy regions have a lot of distractions. Yo dog may not follow your commands. Therefore, the training sessions must be done at a place where it is calm and quiet period once you have confidence at your dog will not get distracted, then you can take him or her to busy regions.
